The kick-off meeting for ICA-Net

The kick-off meeting for ICA-NetThe kick-off meeting for ICA-Net (An international complaint-handling network for cross-border online shopping) was held in Tokyo on December 19th, 2008.
The participating members of the trial which starts early 2009 (Japan, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan) attended the meeting. The representative from Vietnam and Thailand also participated in the meeting as observers, which are interested in joining the network. ICA-Net is expected to function as one of the important tools for building confidence among consumers of cross-border online shopping.

APEC CEO Summit 2008Mr. Enomoto, GBDe Overall Chair, and Mr. Nagata, Secretariat, participated in the APEC CEO Summit 2008 held in Lima, Peru on November 21, 2008.
The CEO Summit was held parallel to the meeting of APEC Economic Leaders. It provided the opportunity for senior business people to have discussions, including about how to understand the current critical financial crisis and to activate the economy.
Opinions from members who attended the Summit in the business sectors, not only from Asian Pacific but also worldwide economies, gave GBDe tips on how to play a global role as an international organization.

Consumer Confidence Issue Group Workshop

Consumer Confidence Issue Group WorkshopConsumer Confidence Issue Group (CCIG), led by NEC Corporation, held the 2nd workshop on October 30th in San Francisco. The three sub-groups (ADR, Trustmark, Data Privacy) reported this year's activities and had discussions with distinguished guest speakers, including Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (Japan), Department of Commerce(USA), Consumers International(Malaysia), TRUSTe (USA), etc. CCIG will continue having dialogues with various stakeholders for building trust between consumers and on-line merchants which is a key for the sound growth of cross-border B2C online transactions.

APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (APEC TEL 38) was held in Lima, Peru on October 12-17, 2008 Mr. Ito from NTT DATA AgileNET gave a guest statement on behalf of GBDe at the Plenary Meeting on October 17th. In the statement, Mr. Ito provided a report of GBDe activities this year focusing on international NFC payment. He also introduced the Annual Summit to be held at the end of October 2008, for which this year's GBDe achievements (as recommendations and reflection papers) would be publicized on the website. Mr. Ito productively exchanged ideas about specific GBDe activities and future affiliating possibilities with economy representatives and guests.

Tokyo on September 8th, 2008.
IPA And NRI Held One Day WorkshopCyber Security Issue Group, GBDe's Internet Security related issue group organized by Information-Technology Promotion Agency of Japan - IPA, held their workshop on September 8th at NRI HQ conjunction with NRI’s Ubiquitous Network Society Issue Group. The back to back workshop in the morning half focused on the current status of the Biometric Security. About 30 participants from Industry, Government, and University have attended this session.

IPA And NRI Held One Day WorkshopUbiquitous Network Society Issue Group, GBDe’s Key issue group since 2004 led by Nomura Research Institute – NRI with several other GBDe members as issue group participants their workshop on September 8th at NRI HQ conjunction with NRI’s Ubiquitous Network Society Issue Group. The back to back workshop in the afternoon half focused on the current status of the Ecology and Ubiquitous Network with its sustainability to the society. About 30 participants from Industry and Government have attended this session.

APEC Electronic Commerce Steering Group (APEC ECSG 18) was held in Lima, Peru from August 12-16th.

Mr. Chihara of NEC Corporation made a presentation during the technical seminar about ICA-Net Initiative (International Consumer Complaint Handling Network for B2C e-commerce) representing Consumer Confidence Issue Group of GBDe.
As a result, it has been recognized by APEC ECSG that the ICA-Net initiative contributes to the Data Privacy Pathfinder project.

During the ECSG Plenary Meeting on 16th, Mr. Nagata of NTT-Data reported about GBDe's current activities and the forthcoming GBDe Summit meeting in October.

GBDe has one of the four special guest seats at APEC ECSG since 2003 and continues participating in the meetings as a representative from private sector organizations.

Digital Opportunity WorkshopDigital Opportunity issue group, GBDe's new issue group organized by Institute of Information Industry(III) based in Taipei, held their 1st workshop on June 27th. The workshop focused on the current status of digital divide and digital opportunities in Asia Pacific region. Approximately 170 people from Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and United States, participated in the event.

2nd BSC MeetingThe 2nd BSC meeting was held in Taipei, Taiwan on June 26th. Our 6 issue groups, Digital Home, International NFC Payment, Cyber Security, Consumer Confidence, Eco Ubiquitous Network Society, and Digital Opportunity presented a progress report on its on-going activity. The meeting also focused on the following agendas:
1) new funding guideline
2) 2008 summit plan
3) on-going recruiting activities.

Consumer Confidence Issue Group MeetingConsumer Confidence Issue Group, GBDe's oldest issue group led by NEC Corporation, held a group meeting on June 25th. They discussed about the current activities on how to build trust between consumers and merchants in the cross-border on-line B2C transactions, especially in the areas of TrustMark, ADR(Alternative Dispute Resolutions), and Privacy Data Protection. Special guests in each area were invited to the meeting and made the meeting informative and constructive: Head of Consumers International(ADR), Director of McCann Ericson Taiwan(Privacy Data Protection), and Executive Director of SOSA Taiwan(TrustMark).

Digital Home Workshop
Digital Home Issue Group held a workshop on June 25th. We invited 11 distinguished speakers and 117 participants working in digital home related fields, such as government agencies, service providers, CPE manufacturers, and home builders. In the morning section, the speakers shared their valuable ideas and experiences with the participants on feasible business models, as well as to discuss opportunities and challenges in the digital home industry. In the afternoon sections, we had a comprehensive discussion about public policy in the aspect of protecting personal privacy and enhancing security in digital home services.
 

International NFC Payment Workshop

International NFC Payment WorkshopOne of our issue groups, International NFC Payment, held a workshop on June 24th. 14 distinguished speakers and 128 people working in the NFC related fields, such as domestic mobile network operators, StarHub, financial organizations, NFC chip solution providers and service providers, participated in this workshop. Issues of international NFC application, particularly issues of Trusted-Service-Management, were discussed. We also had a comprehensive discussion about user requirements, ways to get NFC services,

certification and interoperability problems of NFC payment applications, and sought for an "all-win" business model for further growth of NFC services.

ATA's Chair handover ceremony and interim meeting and workshop were held in Hanoi, Vietnam. GBDe's corporate member Chunghwa Telecom's Chairman, Mr.Ho-Chen, officially became the chairperson of ATA 2008/9. GBDe's Co-Chair, Mr. Kawamura made a keynote speech at the ceremony, showing our strong commitment and support to ATA. Mr. Misaki from Nomura Research Institute (NRI) participated in the 2nd session of the meeting, and Mr, Takeo Koyama from NEC served as a moderator in the 1st session of the meeting.

2008 APEC TEL TokyoThe 7th APEC Ministerial Meeting on Telecommunications and Information Industry was held in Bangkok on April 20-25. Mr. Tomoo (Tom) Misaki from NRI attended this meeting on behalf of GBDe, and gave a presentation on Smart Phones at the "Three Party Dialogue" session. Some attendees asked Mr. Misaki about joining similar workshops and seminars, and this could be the first of many dialogues we hold on this subject. We also announced that our annual summit will be held in San Francisco on October 31, 2008.

P.S. Also, the former Overall Chair of GBDe, Mr. Ho-Chen Tan, Chairman and CEO of Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), delivered an impressive speech.

APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (APEC TEL 37) was held in Tokyo from March 23-28th. On behalf of "Cyber Security issue group" in GBDe, Mr. Yamada from IPA provided a report of “Security on Software-embedded Systems Including Cell Phones and Handheld Devices” at "Workshop on Handheld Mobile Device Security".
In the WG Plenary, we reported GBDe’s activity last year, and introduced current 6 issue groups that were approved in our 1st BSC meeting. We also encouraged all the participants of the meeting to participate in the coming Summit 2008.

We will participate in TELMIN 7 in April, TEL 38 in October, and continue making contribution to APEC TEL on various issues. ( Cyber Security, Digital Opportunity, Digital Home, etc. )

APEC Electronic Commerce Steering Group Meeting (APEC ECSG 17) was held in Lima from February 19-24th. 2 representatives from GBDe participated in this meeting, and gathered information regarding the current status of data privacy in each economies. We also submitted a voluntary report explaining GBDe activities to its Plenary.

We reported on-going activities of one of our issue group,"Consumer Confidence”, which is strongly associated with ECSG and its activities. As GBDe, we will continue participating in APEC ECSG’s “Path Finder Project".
